After securing promotion, Genoa has secured its first signing for the upcoming season in Serie A: Josep Martínez. Thus, the goalkeeper is no longer part of RB Leipzig and continues his journey in Italy, where he has found the playing time he didn't have in Germany. The Spanish goalkeeper is one of the pillars of the team thanks to his strong performances between the posts.
Genoa secured promotion to the Italian Serie A and ensured the first signing of the season. Valencian Josep Martínez, originally from Alzira and loaned by Leipzig, will continue to be linked to the Italian team next season due to his contract. The 24-year-old Valencian has been the best goalkeeper in Serie B this season, and his goal is to succeed in Calcio.
In June 2022, Josep Martínez changed teams and leagues. The young goalkeeper confirmed his departure from RB Leipzig to try his luck in Serie A. The Alzira native did not have opportunities in the German team, as he only played three matches that season. Now the goalkeeper embarks on the Genoa project after the Italian club announced his signing: "Josep Martínez is a new player for Genoa. The goalkeeper, raised in Barcelona's youth academy, wore RB Leipzig's shirt last season. He has one cap for the Spanish senior team and three for the U-21 team."
Josep Martínez celebrated with his teammates the first title in RB Leipzig's history. The final match of the German Cup against Freiburg, which ended in a 1-1 draw and was decided on penalties (4-2), was part of the team that achieved this historic milestone.
In November 2021, he had the opportunity to make his debut in the Champions League with his team, Leipzig, against Club Brugge, in the match corresponding to the penultimate round of Group A in the Champions League group stage, replacing the starting goalkeeper who tested positive for coronavirus.
The 2021-2022 academic year started differently for Josep. In the League he has a substitute, but he was more adapted and his new manager, Jesse Marsch, inmediately showed him confidence. In fact, on October 25 before the cup match against Babelsberg, he assured that he had ‘’trained very well’’ and therefore, he deserved the opportunity to prove it, playing. His team went through the tie without conceding goals.
However, the summer of 2021 will be hard to forget for Josep Martínez. He is part of the Spanish under-21 team and disputes the European Championsship in Hungary and Slovenia, in witch the national team reaches the semifinals. Also, he lived one of the most important days of his career.
The absolute Spanish National Team had a friendly match against Lithuania in Leganés, but Sergio Busquets had tested positive for Covid and Luis Enrique´s players had to quarantine. That match was played by the U-21 team and in the 68th minute, Josep Martínez came onto the field to replace his teammate Álvaro Fernández. The final result was 4-0 in favor of the Spanish team..
In January 2020 he announced his signing, although Josep would stay until June 30 on loan in Gran Canaria.
From the beginning, he has started teaching German. He is very involved in his new team, but also was in UD. Despite this, injuries and Covid made the situation a bit difficult. In the summer of 2020, the competition resumes, Las Palmas plays in the League, but RB Leipzig has to play in Champions and claims Josep, who goes to Portugal after playing his last two duels.
His firts weeks with the German team '' were a bit different'' as it was ''a new country'' for him and a new culture, very different from Spain's culture. His coach then, Julian Nagelsmann admits that he needs to adapt and in the firts few months he's the team's third goalkepper, although it does nor take long fot him to be summoned. That course only plays the last league game against Herta Berlin,
Against Lugo, a direct rival, Josep makes his firts star as a professional and they win 4-1.It is April 28 of 2019, and at the duel, he claims to hace ''enjoyed himself like a child''. Until the end of the season, in another 6 matches, Josep maintains the confidence of his coach. They have played 7 matches in the Second Division, hace won three and tied another two, conceding only 8 goals, for the 42 that UD had. During those months everything is good news. The football Fraft Technical Committee chooses him among the 55 best young players in Spanish under-21 and becomes and official member of the Las Palmas first team.
In the summer of 2017, Josep changes his mind and joins the ranks of the Union Deportiva Las Palmas to play for it's subsidiary. The sports management of the Canarian team highlights ''his great projection'' as well as ''his aerial game and great command with his feet''.
In his second year in Gran Canaria, he became indisputable in the reserve team and became UD's third goalkeeper. His perfomances in the subsidiary are relevant, but first team has problems. Three coaches pass through Las Palmas that season and the last of them, Pepe Mel, will change the career of Josep Martínez.
On match day 34, UD plays for relegation and loses 0-3 against Cádiz. That day, the started goalkeeper, Raúl Fernandez, suffered a double injury that would keep him off the field for 3 months. Nauzet Pérez was the one who was going to replace him, but he did not convince in the following match in Albacete 4-2 and Mel made an important decision : Put Josep Martínez as goalkeeper
His second season at La Masia is not fuly satisfactory because he suffers two major injuries, especially a broken hand.Even that, he receives and exciting call at the beginning of April 2016:he is summoned by the Spanish under-18 team.
Josep arrived at Barça in 2015. His first year he played in youth B, while in the second he even played two games in the youth league, the Champions League of the category, he started in the division of honor and even did the preseason with the first team
He started playind football at a young age at the Unión Deportiva Alzira. It didn't take long for him to stand out and attract the attention of important teams. Being a first-year youth, a scout from FC Barcelona is advised to watch him play live. He goes and recommends to the leaders of the Campo Nou the ''immediate incorporation'' of Josep Martínez . In principle he will be on trial for five days, but before the finish, he has already convinced the Barça Team.

In 2020, Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martínez left Las Palmas for RB Leipzig in pursuit of the Champions League. Despite being considered a promising talent, a lack of playing time led him to Genoa in Serie B last year, where he now stands out as a leader in Serie A.
Martínez, nurtured in the FC Barcelona youth academy, took a turn after his stint with Las Palmas in 2019. After a brief period with RB Leipzig, he was loaned to Genoa in July 2022. In 'Calcio,' he excelled as the starting goalkeeper, securing promotion to Serie A and being named the best goalkeeper in Serie B.
Genoa exercised the purchase option for €3.5 million, and Martínez, whose contract expires in 2024, is delivering a standout performance this season in Serie A. His performance will determine his future, but his emotional connection with the coastal city will endure. This Friday, he hopes to play his 11th match against Hellas Verona, a direct rival for Serie A survival.
